Armando Gutierrez, the in-store nutritionist at Nutrition Smart in Pembroke Pines, Florida, learned about using supplements to maintain health from his father, a physician. “My dad was at the forefront of understandings about vitamins and minerals,” Gutierrez recalls. “He had show horses, and he was able to see a difference in the coat, the eyes, the awareness of the horses when they were given supplements, versus others under the same conditions without them. He saw the horses were gaining some benefit.”

At age 70, Gutierrez attributes his abundance of energy to his lifelong emphasis on healthy practices, including the judicious use of supplements. He draws on his extensive experience when providing information to customers at Nutrition Smart.

“Wellness covers multiple things,” says Gutierriez. “You have to think of mindset, sleep patterns and food selection for your needs at your time of life. You add supplements to your food selection to make sure you’re getting all the nutrition your body requires.”

Exercise is also critical to maintaining health, Gutierriez adds. “If you’re not moving, you’re not moving inflammation.” When people aren’t exercising, he encourages them to start out with at least a bit of walking.

For supplementation, Gutierriez generally recommends vitamin C, the antioxidant coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a probiotic, digestive enzymes, a good multivitamin, and healthful fats—a combination of avocado oil, fish oil and flaxseed, which he suggests taking mostly in powdered form to add bulk and fiber to the digestive tract. Other supplements should be chosen according to individual patterns and needs.

The staff at Nutrition Smart are eager to help every person who walks through the door, Gutierrez notes. “We want to give them the best information
that’s current and products that are proven, with a track record, with a name, that many individuals have tried and sensed a difference.”

Knowledgeable staff tends to stay with the company for many years; Gutierrez has worked there for almost two decades. The management’s caring attitude trickles down to employees and customers, who know that “regardless of the competition, they come in because we will give them the right information and sell them the products they need, not add just anything to fill up their baskets.”

Nutrition Smart has seven stores, located on the east and west coasts of Florida. The Pembroke Pines branch is the flagship store and opened in 1996, a few miles from the current location. Two years ago, the store moved from an industrial area to a more residential neighborhood and installed updated lighting and shelving in a bigger building. The clientele is multicultural, with many Spanish speakers and visitors from Jamaica and the Bahamas, who come to see relatives and buy supplies that are unavailable in the Caribbean.

Each store offers special events, such as senior discount days with 10% off for customers over 55, lectures on technologies such as ozone therapy and neurofeedback, and juicing demonstrations. Customers can make appointments for blood cell analysis, with personalized recommendations based on the results of testing. Nutrition Smart’s products, from groceries to beauty aids, are comparable to those of the giant retailer Whole Foods, says Gutierrez—but with crucial differences.

“Our produces and our nuts and seeds are 100% organic. We have a broad selection of gluten-free products and a big focus on supplements. We are known in the area as the company that carries the majority of brands at a good, everyday price. We make sure our customers are walking out with good products.”
