Rugby players who consumed EPA and DHA, the omega-3 acids found in fish oil, along with a protein drink experienced better muscle recovery in a recent study. The research was conducted in New Zealand, where rugby is a major sport. During the preseason training period, 20 professional players consumed protein drinks every day for five weeks. Some of the players’ drinks also included EPA and DHA. By day 35, players in the omega-3 group had less lower-body soreness than those in the protein-only group. The omega-3 group also scored better on counter movement jump tests, which are designed to measure explosive lower-body power. Results were published in the European Journal of Sport Science.
