Stop. The latest trend in aquatic pets is the nano tank, mini-tanks (between 1.5 gallons and 10 gallons) available as ready-to-go kits. Nanos often include sophisticated filtration systems and LED lighting, which make them fairly easy to maintain; add a heating element and you can keep fish that need more tropical temperatures. If you’re new to aquariums, though, it’s best to go with a cool-water tank (between 64° and 75°F).

The biggest mistake you can make is stuffing your nano with too many inhabitants, especially those that will grow too big. In coolwater tanks, Danios are hardy schooling fish available in a number of handsome varieties, such as zebra and turquoise; the Golden White Cloud is a minnow that features a gold body with red markings. Eye-catching Sparkling Gouramis do well in warmer water; just be aware that the males can get chippy with each other.
