Greyhounds are known for their blazing speed—only the cheetah runs faster—as well as their friendly natures.

The second attribute is often taken advantage of in favor of the first when these dogs are raced competitively; stories abound of dogs being doped, abused and finally abandoned after their track days are over. Fortunately, dog racing is in decline. Until it goes out of business for good, though, The Greyhound Project will help retired racers find good homes.

The group’s site, adopt-a-greyhound.org, provides one-stop shopping for potential adopters, who can not only find local organizations with adoptable dogs but also information on the adoption procedure and how to introduce a dog into your home, among other topics. The Greyhound Project says you can join other adopters who have found their new companions to be among “the nicest and most affectionate pets they’ve ever had.”
