Intense Exercise for Sharper Memory

  • If you want to see improvements in high-interference memory, a little bit of exercise may help.

Hitting the gym hard may do more than build your body—it may help you keep your mental edge as well.

In a study at Canada’s McMaster University, 95 healthy young adults either did high-intensity interval exercise sessions, did the exercise plus cognitive training or did nothing and served as a control group.

According to results in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, after six weeks both exercise groups saw improvements in high-interference memory, the kind you would use, for example, to pick out your car from others of the same make, model, and color in a parking lot.
