Pre-Workout Vitamin C May Boost Recovery

Every serious athlete knows that how you recover from a workout is almost as important as what you do while you’re in the gym or on the field. Now it appears that vitamin C may help you in that recovery phase. An international study team asked 19 healthy, but sedentary, women between the ages of 22 and 25 to ride an exercise bike for 30 minutes at moderate intensity after taking either 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C or a placebo. After a week, the women exercised again, this time switching things up. According to results published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, vitamin C was able to suppress the activity of super-oxide dismutase, a marker of stress in the body. Those women may want to stick with the cycling: Other research has found that exercise boosts cognition no matter how young you are. In this study, led by Columbia University, 132 sedentary people between the ages of 20 and 67 were randomly assigned to six months of either aerobic exercise or a stretching-and-toning routine four times a week. As expected, the older participants in the aerobic exercise group saw an increase in their thinking skills. However, those abilities also improved in the younger participants as well, according to results published in the journal Neurology.
